PhD Scholarship in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University College Cork, Ireland

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork, is pleased to invite applications for a PhD scholarships to be taken up from October 2021 or January 2022.

The PhD Scholarship in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student proposing to conduct, or already conducting, research in any of the wide range of disciplines, thematic areas and regions covered by the Department, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Catalan Studies;
  • Cultural Studies;
  • Galician Studies;
  • Gender and Violence;
  • Golden Age Studies;
  • Iberian Peninsula;
  • Latin America
    • Mexico
    • the Caribbean
    • Southern Cone;
  • Modern History and Politics;
  • Literature;
  • Memory Studies;
  • Theatre;
  • Translation Studies;
  • Visual Culture and Film

We also welcome applications from those interested in comparative topics, which might include comparisons between the literature, film or culture of different language areas, subject to the availability of relevant expertise in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for external funding during the first year

The scholarship will cover registration fees for a full-time PhD as well as small stipend (1,790 euros) divided into 12 monthly payments. In return, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute 4-5 hours per week of language and/or tutorial teaching to undergraduates during term-time, as well as full-time dedication to their research project. The scholarship will be tenable for up to three years for the PhD and one year for the MRes, subject to an annual performance review and funding permitting. Please note that applications for full-time postgraduate study will be prioritised but part-time applications pro-rata may also be considered.
