About The Workshop

Within the coordinated research project “The interaction between phonology and derivation and inflection processes in Romance languages (InFoDerFlex)” (PID2023-150846NB-C32), we are organizing a two-day workshop on “Morphosyntax conditioning of phonology in Stratal and parallel frameworks”.

Workshop description

This workshop aims to bring together researchers investigating how morphosyntactic structure conditions phonological computation, with a special focus on insights from Stratal Optimality Theory (Stratal OT), but also parallel frameworks.

In Stratal OT, grammatical information influences the application of phonology through three principal mechanisms, level selection (stem, word, phrase), cyclic misapplication, and prosodic bounding, each offering a distinct window into the interaction between morphology, syntax, and phonology.

We invite contributions that explore how grammatical structure determines phonological domains and drives phonological alternations, whether through procedural (cyclic) or representational (prosodic) mechanisms.

The workshop seeks to foster dialogue across theoretical models, from stratal architectures to monostratal OT, Cophonology Theory, and Output-Output correspondence approaches.

Topics of interest

We invite papers addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Level or cophonology selection in the domain of derivation and inflection
  • Cyclic vs. prosodic conditioning of phonological processes
  • Cross-linguistic evidence for stratal organization in phonology
  • Comparative analyses across Stratal OT, Cophonology Theory, and monostratal OT
  • Theoretical implications for modularity, lexical storage, and grammatical architecture

Submission of abstracts

The workshop will feature 45 minute talks (30-35 minutes followed by 15-10 minutes for comments and questions). Abstracts must be sent to francescjosep.torres@uab.cat by March 31, 2026. Abstracts will be reviewed by at least 2 reviewers.
