Organizers 2011-2012: CLT Graduate Students

Organizers course 2010-2011: Adriana Fasanella Seligrat and Carlos Rubio Alcalá

This is a reading group about issues in current linguistic theory. In the line of the previous reading group at the CLT, we would like to invite you to meet every other week to discuss papers and book chapters that will be proposed in advance.

We shall meet on alternate Fridays from 11.30 to 13.00 at the UAB, Facultat de Lletres at the UAB.

Readings will be proposed at least two weeks in advance along with a suggested reading guide which will include open questions for discussion during the meeting. Attendants are encouraged to send their own questions and topics they would like to talk about during those two weeks. Communication, reading guides and chairing will be in English, but participants are welcome to intervene in Catalan or Spanish.

"The Theory lab: what we could do, concretely"
Session led by Cedric Boeckx (ICREA/UAB) and Ángel Gallego (UAB).

Abstract
"Following the last reading group meeting, I'd like us to explore concrete lines of research for our "theory lab". During the meeting I will suggest a few concrete ideas we could pursue, and I would like to encourage people to also suggest their own avenues for future research". Cedric Boeckx (ICREA/UAB).

"And now what?: a discussion after the Boeckx-Starke debate
Session led by Cedric Boeckx (ICREA/UAB) and Ángel Gallego (UAB).

The new session of the reading group is entitled "And now what?", and it will be a discussion about what to do next, after the Boeckx-Starke debate, i.e., what are some of the issues that came up (and that we did not resolve), and that may be worth investigating. Therefore, there is no set reading for this session.

Paper: "Language Acquisition: A Linguistic Treatment" in Partha Niyogi, The Computational nature of language learning and evolution, 2006: 83-116 (Chapter 3). Part II.
Session led by Jordi Fortuny (UAB).

There are copies of the book at the library, and there is another copy of the reading at the Sala T of the CLT for anyone in need of a copy.

The reading deals with language acquisition, a topic we haven't talked about yet, but some parts of it depend on a little computational and mathematical knowledge. That is why the article will be reviewed and explained by Jordi Fortuny before we have discussion.

Sessió 4

This session will be different, since the visitant PhD student Adriana Quinelo, from Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, will present some of her work within her research in her thesis project and would like to receive as mush discussion and feedback as possible. For this session, then, there is no suggested reading.

Here you have the table of contents Adriana Quinelo is going to present:

1-The data - (ECM, Raising and Control-Infinitival Small Clauses: Case Assignment in English and Portuguese of the embedded subject) and previous results from the Master's dissertation;

2- The Ph. D Thesis proposal as well as the Project (Topic, Theme and its objectives) to be developed at UAB;

3- The Theory of Phases and Feature Inheritance along with its implications for my topic and data - C. Boeckx's reading suggestion;

4- Some other proposals for the analysis of the same data, especially concerning Control verbs and the distribution of PRO (Null Case) - that of Carlos Cecchetto & Roberto Oniga (2001); Boeckx & Hornstein (2006); and hopefully that of Landau (2007);

5- Discussion, questions and suggestions.
